Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our equipment, tooling and ordering process.

"Making the weld go round"TM

What tube and pipe sizes can orbital welding cover?
Our equipment and tooling typically covers from 6mm to 273mm outside diameter, with wall thicknesses from 0.7mm to 6mm. Larger or unusual sizes can often be accommodated with bespoke tooling — get in touch with your dimensions and we'll advise or see our Orbital Welding Equipment page.
Is Orbital welding slower than Manual TIG or MIG welding?
The short answer is no. Any tube/pipe from 6mm to 273mm OD with wall thickness from 0.7mm to 6mm is not only faster, but the welds are repeatable every time ensuring 100% quality pass rates when the right process steps are followed. Click here to download our Manual v Orbital justification report for further details.
Is Orbital welding more difficult than Manual TIG welding?
No, quite the opposite. The skills required to operate an Orbital welding system are very different to the superlative skills required to Manually TIG weld stainless steels & nickel alloys. Some TIG welding knowledge is advantageous, but not essential, to operate Orbital welding equipment. With Orbital welding the focus is on the consistency of the weld preparation and joint set up before welding. That's where the orbital process machines & tools come into play, to ensure repeatability in the weld prep and joint set up. Once you have created a weld program on the Orbital welding system, it will weld to those set parameters/specifications 100 times out of 100 with just a press of a button.
Do you have to be a fully qualified coded Manual TIG welder to operate an Orbital welding system?
No. There are different ISO specific welding standards for the Orbital welding process. From qualifying the WPS, operator qualification and external inspection/qualification of the weld. Click here to download our help guide explaining the qualification process and relevant ISO EN BSI standards applicable.
Aren't orbital welding systems and equipment very expensive?
If you're just looking at the price, then yes, when compared to manual TIG welding equipment. However, when considering moving from manual TIG welding to Orbital welding, you must take into consideration the future savings and quality advantages of Orbital TIG welding over Manual TIG welding. Can you help if we're not sure what equipment or tooling we need?
Yes — tell us about the joint (material, diameter, wall thickness, access, environment) and we'll recommend the right combination of equipment and tooling, or design something bespoke if nothing standard fits. Contact Us or complete our Request A Quotation form.
Can we try before we buy?
Yes, we come to your facility to fully demonstrate any orbital welding equipment that you wish to see at no cost to you. During which time we can discuss the applications you're looking to orbitally weld and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Depending on the application and your material availability, we could even weld some sample parts during the demonstration for you to conduct your own quality testing.
Do you offer on-site commissioning and setup?
Yes. We offer on-site commissioning, weld procedure support, operator training and initial process setup to make sure the system is running correctly before we hand it over. See our Installation & Set Up page for more details.
Is Delivery & Setup included in the cost?
Yes. All our equipment new or hire prices include delivery to a factory facility*, installation, setup, operator training, weld procedure support and initial process setup.
* Only ground floor installations. We do not deliver to site, unless setup & installation is not required.
Can you repair and service our orbital equipment after purchase?
Yes. We can repair, service, calibrate (orbital welding power supplies) and supply spare parts for everything we supply. Browse our Warranty, Service, Repairs & Calibration page.
Can we obtain User Manuals & Technical information after purchase?
Yes. We have all User Manuals, plus a vast array of technical information available to download on our Downloads page.
How long does bespoke tooling take to design and manufacture?
It depends on complexity, but a typical custom clamp or fixture runs from initial drawing to proved-out tooling in a few weeks. We'll give you a firm lead time as part of the quote once we understand the joint and application. Click here for more information on our process.
Do you offer tooling & fixtures for orbital equipment you didn't originally sell us?
Yes. We follow the same design & manufacture process for any orbital welding be-spoke tooling. Click here for more information on our process.
